As part of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, students must complete an expedition section, including both a practice and an assessed challenge. This element builds resilience, teamwork and independence, and is often one of the most demanding, and rewarding, parts of the Award.
At Heathfield, Form III students undertake Bronze (two days, one night), while Form IV students complete Silver (three days, two nights). Last weekend, both groups travelled to the New Forest for their practice expedition. Working in teams of five to seven, they carried out kit checks before setting off, initially supported by trainers and then navigating independently.
At camp, students pitched tents and prepared their own meals before an early night. The following morning required a prompt and organised start, with all groups showing determination to complete the route successfully.
This prepares them for their assessed expeditions: Form IV in Dartmoor, Lower Sixth Gold participants in the Brecon Beacons and Form III in the Chilterns, key milestones in their Duke of Edinburgh journey.
