Planning the Prom

By 28/06/2015 No Comments

The girls were set the task of planning a prom using an Excel spreadsheet to manage their proposed budget and researching the costs of everything they would need.  They also had to create a risk assessment to ensure the event was a safe and fun event. They were also asked to consider who would be coming to the prom and what would be the best and most effective way to market the event to that particular group of people.

This was a good opportunity to work as a team and explore the various roles required within team work too. The girls were asked to consider the skills they had to offer within their group and also to think about what skills they would be developing during the activity.

There was an amazing level of creativity as the girls developed diverse themes for their proms, displayed on mood boards or as a mind maps and different approaches were explored to promote and advertise the prom.

IT skills were used to create web pages and to manage social media safely in order to communicate with potential guests to their prom. There was a great deal of internet research required and girls also confidently used good communication skills to telephone and make enquiries about goods and services they planned to use in their prom.

Girls were asked to consider the aspect of social responsibility and what they would do with any profit, and each group chose a charity to which they would give their profit. Some groups even found companies prepared to sponsor their event.

Each group was asked to create a board, visually reflecting their day’s work and they also had to give a short presentation to Heathfield’s Bursar Mr Bueno and to our Director of Studies Mrs Gardiner Legge. Mr Bueno and Mrs Gardiner Legge listened carefully and asked each group questions in order to further understand how their planning would contribute to a successful prom.

Mr Bueno was particularly focused on the high level of financial competency demonstrated by the girls, ensuring each prom would be financially viable and indeed make a profit for their chosen charities. Mrs Gardiner Legge was interested to investigate the quality and depth of learning that had taken place during the project. Both Mr Bueno and Mrs Gardiner Legge were extremely impressed by the high standard and variety of skills displayed by the girls and found choosing a winner very difficult! All groups did a fantastic job and should be proud of their achievements.
