International Students

Heathfield School is an English boarding and day school which welcomes girls from around the world. Just over a fifth of our girls are international students and we are proud to say that we have even had – and still have – some second and third generation international students here.

Girls from a variety of countries currently attend Heathfield including girls from Spain, Italy, Germany, Russia, Thailand, Hong Kong, Japan and China. We also have British pupils whose parents live overseas and international students whose parents live in the UK.

The variety of countries our international students come from combined with the size of our school means that international students mix well at all levels and bring a great deal to Heathfield while benefiting themselves from the culture of a British boarding school.

Our outstanding pastoral care extends to our international students. We are experienced in helping them to settle in to what may seem an alien environment at first and we offer specialist help to girls from overseas for whom English is a foreign (EFL) or additional (EAL) language (Click here for the EFL page). As well as practical language help, we also offer ongoing pastoral help in all areas to international students as they settle in to Heathfield and throughout their time at Heathfield.

Admissions Process

Applications for a place should be made in the first instance to the Registrar: registrar@heathfieldschool.net.

Girls will be expected to visit Heathfield for assessment and interview with their parents.

Applicants for a place in Forms I-V will be expected to sit papers in English, Maths and Science. Applicants for a place in Forms I-III will also sit a Non-Verbal Reasoning paper.

For Lower VI entry, conditional offers will be made on the candidate achieving 5 A*-C grades at GCSE or equivalent.

Assessments for international students also include language testing.

Assessment papers will not be sent to schools overseas as our policy is for all papers to be sat here under supervision. Results should reach the candidate within two weeks.

English as an Additional Language

Please see the section in Enrichment here for information on how English is taught to international students.

Applying for a Visa

Heathfield School is expert in guiding international families through the official application process which enables their daughter(s) to study in the UK.

Heathfield sponsors students through their secondary education on a Tier 4 Child Visa and is a Highly Trusted Sponsor.  Currently, only students from outside the EU will be required to apply for a Tier 4 student visa.  The visa application can only be submitted after receipt of the signed acceptance form, together with the overseas deposit and at least a term’s school fees paid in advance.  After payment we will issue the CAS statement which will enable you to apply for a visa.  If you have chosen to pay only one term’s fees in advance you will need to prove that you have the funds to pay a year’s worth of boarding fees for 28 days in your bank account.

Successful applicants must collect their BRP (Biometric Residence Permit) from an allocated point, such as a local post office, within a few days of their arrival at school and must be accompanied by either a parent or guardian.

The cost of the CAS application will be added to your first term’s bill.  If you have any queries regarding visas please contact our Registrar, Isabel Hutchings.

Visas are valid up until the end of the GCSE course.  A new CAS is required for the two year A Level programme in the Sixth Form.
