“I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library.”
Jorge Luis Borges
The library was completely refurbished and extended in 2007, providing a spacious and attractive study area with seating for fifty students. The updated and centralised resources include a wide range of both fiction and non-fiction books, topic files, journals and newspapers, as well as audio books, DVDs and online reference material. Also, the careers library is housed in the main library and guidance is given on how to make effective use of the various printed and electronic material. Six computer workstations are available for use and there is comprehensive wi-fi available for further study and research.
The library is accessible at all times, including evenings and weekends, and a chartered librarian is available to give guidance and assistance. Form I are taught library skills as part of their PSHE programme, whilst information retrieval skills to support academic studies are reinforced in groups and on an individual basis throughout a girl’s school career. Teachers are welcome to bring classes to carry out research, thus ensuring that the library is an integral part of teaching and learning.
Girls are encouraged not only to become independent learners, but also to read widely and to value reading as a source of pleasure. A bookshop is held once a term, when students can select and build up their own collections.
