We are delighted to be shortlisted in the Best Artwork Project category:

This powerful GCSE project explores the deep connections between the Transatlantic Slave Trade and cultural resilience, inspired by personal history. Using braids, hair and traditional fabrics, Tamara (Form V) highlights how enslaved people preserved their identities and resisted oppression.

Braids played a central role, symbolising both loss and strength. Enslaved women were forced to have their hair shaved, erasing their cultural roots. But within the confines of plantations, hair became a secret tool for communication. Enslaved individuals braided escape routes and safe houses into their hair, transforming it into a powerful language of survival.

The project features a collection of garments made from hair and tribal fabric, each piece a tribute to cultural endurance. Through these creative mediums, Tamara captures both the trauma of slavery and the resilience of those who fought to preserve their heritage. This exceptional work invites reflection on the lasting impact of the slave trade and the unbreakable strength of cultural identity, showcasing remarkable skill and insight, especially for a GCSE student. We look forward to hearing the results on 6th May.

The Crucible Drama production

Heathfield’s production of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible on 13 February, showcased the exceptional talents of students from Forms I to Lower Sixth. The play, set during the Salem witch trials, explores themes of hysteria, integrity and societal pressure.

In this rendition, the role of John Proctor was portrayed with remarkable depth by Sophia (Form V), capturing the character’s internal struggles and moral dilemmas. Sophia’s nuanced performance conveyed Proctor’s journey from guilt to redemption, leaving a lasting impact on the audience. Elizabeth Proctor’s portrayal was equally compelling. Millie (LVI) embodied Elizabeth’s strength and vulnerability, effectively conveying the pain of betrayal and the resilience of forgiveness. Her interactions with John were charged with emotion, highlighting the complexities of their relationship.

The character of Abigail Williams was brought to life with a captivating intensity. Liv (Form V) skilfully depicted Abigail’s manipulative nature and desperation, making her a formidable presence on stage. Her performance provided a stark contrast to the more subdued and righteous townsfolk, emphasising the chaos she instigated.

Overall, the ensemble cast delivered a powerful and cohesive performance, bringing Miller’s complex characters and timeless themes to life. The dedication and talent of Heathfield School’s students were evident, making this production of The Crucible a truly memorable theatrical experience.

Swimming success

Congratulations to Imogen (Form I) who was awarded the Silver medal in January for coming second in the 12 and under category of the 1500m Freestyle at the Bracknell & Wokingham Swimming Club Championships last year. Imogen’s time saw her ranked number one in her age group in the county for this event in the 2024 season. A fantastic achievement, well done!

Cross Country success

Congratulations to Purdy (Form V) who competed on her horse Vinnie in the KBIS Insurance Arena Eventing Championships at Aston le Walls on 8 February, and won the 90cm class. A fantastic result!

Polo success

Astrid (Form I) and Victoria (Form II) represented Heathfield in their first SUPA National Schools’ Junior Polo tournament on Sunday at Oxford Polo Club. They entered in a beginners division and, supported by another student, they played 3 chukkas throughout the sunny but chilly day. Warming up in their first two chukkas, they shone in their third chukka to win 3-0 and were placed fifth in their division overall. A fantastic result – well done girls!

Early IGCSE Maths results

New Head Girl Team

After a series of detailed presentations and interviews, followed by the whole School voting, we are delighted to congratulate and welcome Millie (Head Girl), Kokoro and Matilda (Deputy Head Girls) as our new Head Girl Team for the coming year, along with all our new House Captains and Prefects. The new HGT team take over from Sarah, Hibah and Martha who have worked incredibly hard on a huge range of successful projects over the year. The new House Captains and Prefects also have exciting plans for their terms in office and we look forward to all that is to come. Congratulations to you all!

Great Ormond Street Christmas Carol Concert

Earlier this week, India in Form I attended the star studded Great Ormond Street Hospital 25th Anniversary Christmas Carol Concert at St Paul’s Church in Knightsbridge. India had been a patient at the hospital since she was a baby but fortunately is now just an outpatient and only needs to visit the hospital once a year. India recited the poem Help Wanted by Timothy Tocher beautifully – in front of 750 people! Greg Wise was on stage with India to support her if she wobbled, and Amanda Holden hosted. The event is a major fundraiser for the hospital and the evening has so far raised over £1.1m – and counting! Very well done to India for her superb performance, a fantastic start to her Christmas holiday.

Wendy Reynolds’ Appointment as England Lacrosse Officiating Lead

We are delighted to announce that Wendy Reynolds, Assistant Head (Co-curricular) has been named as Officiating Lead for England Lacrosse! This milestone appointment is a testament to Wendy’s lifelong dedication to the sport, both on and off the field.

As a player, she represented England for 14 years, earning World Cup silver (1993) and bronze medals (1997). Since retiring from playing, Wendy has transitioned to officiating, representing England as an umpire at every U19 and senior World Championship between 2003 and 2013, including officiating in two gold medal games. Her commitment to excellence has also been recognised with the World Lacrosse Emeritus Award for Women’s Officiating in 2017.

In this new role, Wendy will oversee England’s officiating workforce, manage national and international rules and committees, and support the development of the next generation of officials. Her extensive experience and passion will undoubtedly continue to leave a lasting legacy in the Lacrosse community.

Congratulations Wendy on this incredible achievement!

ISA National Art Competition 2024

With over 1700 entries submitted nationwide, and a total of 266 incredible artworks showcased at the final exhibition, we are thrilled to announce the following placed Heathfield students:

KS4 Drawing

First Place: E Sun – Synaesthesia

Ella explored the theme Synaesthesia and created this pencil drawing to represent the route the brain takes through multiple unrelated senses causing you to experience more than one sense simultaneously. The subject is wearing a fabric head piece which conceals the senses which is used as a physical representation of what a person experiencing Synaesthesia would feel.

KS4 Textiles

Second Place: F Hayes Flores – Coral Bleaching

Fernanda created a crocheted piece representing the impact of coral bleaching. The individual coral sculptures show how coral reefs support some of the most biodiverse ecosystems on the planet. Thousands of marine animals depend on coral reefs for survival and as the coral reef ecosystems collapse, already at-risk species may face extinction.

KS4 Fashion

Highly Commended: T Ezeokoli – Kaleidoscope

Tamara’s garment is made from hair and it was created to represent the unjust transatlantic slave trade. During this time, captors would brutally shave the hair of women, stripping them of their cultural roots and identity. Later, after the slaves were sold to plantations, they would braid their hair in patterns resembling escape maps. The slaves also used braiding patterns to communicate with each other.

I am so proud of Heathfield’s students who were placed in multiple categories. At Heathfield we aim to empower each student to produce artwork with meaning and purpose in a range of media, we are able to fully support the students’ interests and cater their projects to reflect the ever-changing creative world. I believe this is evident in the range of outcomes which were put forward for the ISA competition.
