Our Lower Sixth Politics students attended the PolEcon Conference set in the impressive Methodist Central Hall, just off Parliament Square under the gaze of Big Ben. They heard politicians from all major political parties as well as pollsters and journalists including Alastair Campbell. Particular speaker favourites were Zack Polanski, Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg and Wes Streeting. Whilst debates raged on by-election results, the environment, the Middle East and the cost of living crisis, the underlying message was one of hope and involvement. With this in mind it was great to see our students debating all the way home on the train which speakers views they were most aligned with. It is only with this engagement that future challenges will be overcome!

ISA STEM Competition

Congratulations to Naomi, LVI, whose entry in the ISA STEM Competition 2026 in the category Design a system to capture rainwater to irrigate and regreen deserts has earnt her a place in the finals. Her design is inspired by the Namib Desert Beetle which is found in the Namib desert along the southeastern coast of Africa. It features hydrophilic regions (in green) and hydrophobic channels (in blue), which allow water to be collected and transported efficiently. Naomi used the Desmos 3D Graphing Calculator to create the model of her rainwater collection system, using mathematical equations to plot each shape. With entries from over 750 other schools, the result is a real testament to her creativity, dedication and hard work.

New Head Girl Team

With voting and interviews completed in November, the whole School was eager to hear who would form their new Student Leadership Team.

We are delighted to congratulate and welcome Liv as our new Head Girl and Sophia and Naomi as Deputy Head Girls. Liv, Sophia and Naomi are the School’s Head Girl Team for the coming year along with all our new House Captains and Prefects.

Thank you to all the students who applied and interviewed for a leadership position. The planning and hard work behind all their impressive presentations were clear to see. Congratulations to the new team and we look forward to seeing the difference they are going to make for their fellow students and the School in the year ahead.

Lower Sixth Photography Lesson

Lower Sixth Photography students recently took part in a lesson on shutter speed. Students split into two creative teams to explore the power of both fast and slow exposures. One group took on the challenge of freezing motion, capturing milk splashes and balls plunging into a vase of milk with lightning-fast shutter speeds. The result? Crisp, dramatic images, and just a little milk chaos around the studio!

Meanwhile, the second group stepped into the dark studio to experiment with light drawing, using an ice light and slow shutter speed to create mesmerising trails and glowing shapes. The contrast between freezing motion and painting with light brough thte concept of shutter speed vividly to life.

The room buzzed with creativity, curiosity and laughter, proving once again that technical learning can be both artistic and great fun.

Launch of a co-ed Sixth Form in September 2026

We are proud to announce the beginning of an exciting new chapter in our 125 year history, with plans to welcome boys to attend our Sixth Form from September 2026.

Commenting on the change, Jonathan Williams, Headmaster, said, “We believe the time is right for Heathfield to welcome boys into the Sixth Form for the first time. We fully recognise that this is a significant step and are confident that this decision is absolutely in the best interests of our current and future students. We are excited at the positive impact this change will have on Heathfield in the years to come.”

Moving to a co-educational Sixth Form offers exciting benefits for all students, providing a rich academic and social experience. Our smaller A Level classes and the broad choice of subjects ensure personalised learning, while the inclusion of both girls and boys brings more diverse perspectives and collaboration across productions, clubs, and student leadership. Our students will gain invaluable experience in a mixed environment, equipping them with the confidence, skills and resilience to thrive in future co-educational settings.

Boys will be fully involved in all aspects of school life, including mixed sports, choirs, drama and musical productions, and leadership opportunities, with careful planning for areas such as boarding, to maintain Heathfield’s balanced and supportive environment.

The transition will continue the Heathfield ethos of small school, big opportunities with a more dynamic Sixth Form experience for everyone.

Opened in 2022, the purpose built Cadogan Sixth Form, offers excellent facilities including state-of-the-art classrooms and co-curricular spaces, alongside the supportive guidance of dedicated staff. New Head Girl Team

After a series of detailed presentations and interviews, followed by the whole School voting, we are delighted to congratulate and welcome Millie (Head Girl), Kokoro and Matilda (Deputy Head Girls) as our new Head Girl Team for the coming year, along with all our new House Captains and Prefects. The new HGT team take over from Sarah, Hibah and Martha who have worked incredibly hard on a huge range of successful projects over the year. The new House Captains and Prefects also have exciting plans for their terms in office and we look forward to all that is to come. Congratulations to you all!

POLECON Business & Economics Trip

On Tuesday 26 November, the Economics and Business A Level students attended the POLECON conference in Euston, London. The conference featured several prestigious speakers who were both engaging and informative. Among them was Ed Balls, who shared his perspective on dynamism in the economy and emphasized the need for Britain to adopt this approach. This was countered by Kate Raworth, author of Doughnut Economics, who argued that greener and more sustainable growth is essential to protect our planet.

The students participated in a series of voting polls to express their views on various economic issues. One particularly interesting question was whether the UK should trade more with the USA or the EU. Another poll, inspired by Carl Emerson’s discussion of Rachel Reeves’ latest budget, asked students whether they believed the UK would experience positive economic growth in the future.

The conference also featured Grace Blakely, who highlighted the positive aspects of capitalism, and Mark Littlewood, who presented a contrasting view on popular conservatism.

Overall, the students were exposed to a variety of stimulating debates, providing them with insights they can apply to their future studies.

Head Girl Hustings

The entire School gathered in St Mary’s Theatre to hear nine candidates present their cases for joining the Head Girl Team. Each delivered a passionate three-minute speech, sharing campaign promises and reasons to earn the student vote. Following this, students headed to the voting booths, collected slips from the School returning officers, and selected their choices for Head Girl and two Deputies. The candidates will now meet with the Headmistress and Head of Sixth Form to discuss their action plans. The results will be announced on Thursday 12 December. Until then, we wait with bated breath.

A Level Results

Congratulations to all our A Level students for their fantastic achievements – hard work really does pay off! Students are heading off to a wide range of top destinations to follow their individual passions including Bristol, Durham, Exeter, King’s College London, Newcastle, the Royal Veterinary College London and the prestigious Glasgow School of Art. Students will be studying subjects from Law, Medicine, Economics, Biomedical Sciences and Politics to Music, Art, Anthropology and Computer Science. Others have chosen international destinations in the US, Greece and France. We wish them all the very best in their next steps.

Lower Sixth Oxford Visit

Post internal examinations, the Lower Sixth travelled to Oxford as a reward for all their hard work. The mood was energised on both minibuses as the students took over the music selection! During the morning, we heard talks regarding student life, tips of what to look out for on a University Open Day and reminders regarding the application process.

The students enjoyed a little retail therapy and some lunch from the many offerings in Oxford. In the afternoon, we attempted the Oxford pastime of punting. Safe to say skill levels were varied, with Tilly and Freya quickly learning whilst other boats struggled to even face the right way! Quite remarkably no one fell in, despite the endless collisions and numerous groundings!
