Outstanding LAMDA Exam Success

Our students achieved 100% Distinction in all their LAMDA examinations in Acting, Musical Theatre and Speaking in Public. In addition, the top grades are awarded UCAS points with our students gaining 130 UCAS points.

We are incredibly proud of our students’ results, they are a true testament to their hard work, growing confidence and love of performance, alongside the excellent guidance provided by our excellent LAMDA teaching team.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream Performance at South Hill Park

Many congratulations to our cast for their brilliant performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream in the Shakespeare Schools Festival at South Hill Park recently.

The Shakespeare Schools Festival is a cultural education programme that supports young people to perform abridged Shakespeare plays on professional theatre stages. Our students enjoyed the Shakespeare learning experience and performing at South Hill Park, their teamwork and passion shone on stage, and they represented Heathfield impeccably.

We received a lovely review from Marcus Bazley of the Shakespeare Schools Foundation which you can read in full here Heathfield School, he said “this was a graceful and magical Midsummer Night’s Dream performed by a mature and committed company” and we couldn’t be prouder.

Hall Grove School Drama Workshop

In October we welcomed Hall Grove pupils to Heathfield to take part in an immersive and confidence-boosting performance workshop with our Drama department. The theatre was transformed into a wizarding wonderland, setting the scene for a magical afternoon of creativity and collaboration.

The young witches and wizards threw themselves wholeheartedly into their performances, embracing each activity with enthusiasm, imagination and plenty of laughter. It was wonderful to see their confidence grow as they worked together to bring scenes to life, guided and encouraged by our talented Drama team.

We were so impressed by their energy, teamwork and willingness to take on new challenges, every pupil shone in their own way. The afternoon ended with a well deserved tea in true Hogwarts fashion, which was met with smiles all round. The children left full, happy and brimming with excitement from a truly spellbinding experience. We look forward to welcoming them back to Heathfield very soon.

Drama students discover the power of tradition in a bold new Fiddler on the Roof

In September, our Drama students and Scholars from Forms II to Upper Sixth enjoyed a theatre trip to see the Barbican Theatre touring production of Fiddler on the Roof at the Swan Theatre in High Wycombe.

The trip offered students the opportunity to experience a professional performance of a classic musical that explores themes of tradition, change and resilience in a fresh new interpretation. For many of our younger students, this was their first chance to see a traditional large-scale musical, while our senior students were able to engage critically with the production as part of their GCSE and A Level Drama studies.

Trips such as this are an important part of our Drama programme, helping learners to connect classroom study with live performance and sparking conversations that continue long after the curtain falls.

The Crucible Production

Heathfield School’s production of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible in Lent term showcased the exceptional talents of students from Forms I to Lower Sixth. The play, set during the Salem witch trials, explores themes of hysteria, integrity and societal pressure. In this rendition, the role of John Proctor was portrayed with remarkable depth by Sophia (Form V), capturing the character’s internal struggles and moral dilemmas.

Sophia’s nuanced performance conveyed Proctor’s journey from guilt to redemption, leaving a lasting impact on the audience. Elizabeth Proctor’s portrayal was equally compelling. Millie (LVI) embodied Elizabeth’s strength and vulnerability, effectively conveying the pain of betrayal and the resilience of forgiveness. Her interactions with John were charged with emotion, highlighting the complexities of their relationship. The character of Abigail Williams was brought to life with a captivating intensity. Liv (Form V) skilfully depicted Abigail’s manipulative nature and desperation, making her a formidable presence on stage. Her performance provided a stark contrast to the more subdued and righteous townsfolk, emphasising the chaos she instigated.

The ensemble cast delivered a powerful and cohesive performance, bringing Miller’s complex characters and timeless themes to life. The dedication and talent of Heathfield School’s students were evident, making this production of The Crucible a truly memorable theatrical experience.

A Level Drama Trip

A Level Theatre & Drama students recently enjoyed a fantastic trip to see Our Country’s Good at the Lyric in Hammersmith. Directed by the talented Rachel O’Riordan, the play explores themes of redemption, the power of storytelling and the complexities of human nature.

The experience not only deepened our understanding of the play’s historical context, set against the backdrop of the First Fleet to Australia, but also provided valuable insights into the directorial choices that shaped its impactful narrative. The exploration of how art can bring hope and change to the lives of the characters was particularly thought-provoking.

The use of both historical and modern design elements supported the fact that the themes within the play are just as relevant in 2024 as they were when Our Country’s Good was originally presented, making it a perfect complement to our A Level studies. Examples of this include the use of traditional military uniform alongside modern attire and the beautiful, unspoiled Australian landscape becoming increasingly littered with plastic bags and drinks cans.

The trip stimulated vibrant conversation, analysis and evaluation among the students and has developed our appreciation for the power of theatre.

The Witches – Junior School Production

In June, we welcomed audiences to the SMAT to watch the Lower School’s production of ‘The Witches’. It was with great pride and excitement that we presented the performance, which was the result of a term of hard work and collaboration.

This play explores themes such as family, friendship and courage. Our goal was to stay true to the heart of the story while adding our own unique touch and a little more light-heartedness to Roald Dahl’s original text. Auditions took place at the end of the Lent Term, and due to the amount of enthusiastic and talented performers auditioning, it was decided that we would have multiple actors splitting the main roles. In doing this, we were able to give as many of our Junior Performers a chance to shine on the stage.

Each actor embraced their character, bringing their own interpretation and energy to the role. We were also proud to present the amazing talents of our own Form IV Drama (technical) student, Zoe, who was able to showcase her fantastic lighting design.

It was wonderful to see the students grow, not only as performers and designers but also as individuals. Their teamwork and perseverance were inspiring, and we are incredibly proud of what they achieved.

The audience enjoyed both the comedic moments of the play as well as the heartfelt message that Emma B and Poppy H delivered beautifully, “it doesn’t matter who you are or what you look like so long as somebody loves you”.

Scary Little Girls Workshop

Forms I and II took part in a drama workshop run by the theatre company “Scary Little Girls” with a theme of female collaboration and support. There were a variety of activities designed to get our students to think about what it means to be a member of a community and to explore issues they feel passionate about.

The physical activities involved working together to achieve an aim and trusting each other. These activities are also designed to challenge students’ preconceived ideas of how strong they really are. Some girls were amazed that they could lift one another while others were equally amazed that they could be lifted!

It was explained to the students about the all-women peace campaign at Greenham Common in the 1980s. We explored how the success of the campaign depended on the women working collaboratively, even when they did not agree on everything. Students were also able to relate this to their learning earlier in the academic year about the Suffragists and the Suffragettes and their campaign for female emancipation.

Students were then asked to explore topics that they feel passionate about and to devise a short piece about their chosen topic. Topics included climate change and cruelty to animals. The resulting short plays, which involved using many theatrical techniques, were excellent, resonating with the strong feelings the students were exploring. Each group demonstrated that they had worked well together and had listened to different ideas in order to create their final piece together.

A Level Theatre Studies Practical Examination

On Tuesday 14 May, A Level students (Martha, Sasha and Scarlett) treated us to a spectacular, immersive performance based on Jean Genet’s The Maids. Their task was to reimagine the text in a different context, reinterpret it for a different audience or any other kind of creative reworking. The piece was developed using the working methods and techniques of the theatre practitioner of their choice, Antonin Artaud. His Theatre of Cruelty style was certainly evident in St Mary’s Theatre.

Highly creative use of set, music and lighting complimented their intense performance and the girls succeeded in shocking their audience, who were led into the space by silenced doctors after receiving patient ID numbers. Through cleverly choreographed movement and emotional dialogue, we followed the story of Patient 3 as she was introduced to the world of Claire and Solange, who proceeded to transform her into their Madame.

The audience stood in stunned silence after they were ushered away from the performance space. Of course, when given the all clear, the girls were greeted with rapturous applause.
