Our Lower Sixth Politics students attended the PolEcon Conference set in the impressive Methodist Central Hall, just off Parliament Square under the gaze of Big Ben. They heard politicians from all major political parties as well as pollsters and journalists including Alastair Campbell. Particular speaker favourites were Zack Polanski, Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg and Wes Streeting. Whilst debates raged on by-election results, the environment, the Middle East and the cost of living crisis, the underlying message was one of hope and involvement. With this in mind it was great to see our students debating all the way home on the train which speakers views they were most aligned with. It is only with this engagement that future challenges will be overcome!

It was a real privilege to welcome Alanna Fraser to work with our Form IV and Lower Sixth students on what it truly means to lead with purpose in a rapidly changing world. Across a series of engaging and thoughtfully structured workshops, students were challenged to explore their personal values and reflect on how these values shape their leadership style, strengths and decision-making. A key focus was helping them understand themselves as leaders first, before considering titles or roles.

The sessions also looked ahead, asking students to consider how leadership skills can be future proofed in the age of AI. Students reflected on which human skills matter most, how values-led leadership remains essential, and how adaptability, judgement and empathy will continue to define effective leadership in years to come. Working collaboratively, leadership teams thought about shared agreements rooted in their collective values, setting clear expectations for how they will work together and support one another. They also began to roadmap their goals, vision and priorities for their leadership journey, creating a strong foundation for the year ahead.

The workshops were reflective, practical and inspiring, leaving students with greater clarity, confidence and a shared sense of purpose. A valuable and timely experience for our young leaders as they start on their leadership journey for 2026.

This summer, I interned with Publicis Sapient and Omantel, collaborating on a major project with Amazon to launch Oman’s largest marketplace. Working in operations, I was involved in various tasks from research to digital marketing, providing me with a comprehensive view of starting and managing a business. 

The startup environment was dynamic and collaborative, allowing me to interact closely with executives and other team members. This informal structure gave me valuable insights and made the experience both engaging and educational. 

 I appreciated the flexibility and autonomy in my role, which helped me balance work while enjoying my summer. The internship taught me that while academic success is important, real-world skills and seizing opportunities are crucial. It also boosted my confidence and adaptability. Moving forward, I plan to explore internships in law and real estate to gain further industry insights before university.

Starting off in Kota Kinabalu (KK), the capital of Sabah, the girls were assigned team roles and explored the local markets and historical landmarks including Australia Place and the Pillars of Sabah. They then departed for a 4 day hike in the lush Borneo wilderness following rivers, discovering rural villages and paddy fields and crossing rivers via dramatic hanging bridges. At night they pitched their tents and cooked meals, learning bush skills and basic jungle survival skills under the stars.

Completing the trek, girls enjoyed a day of adrenalin fuelled activities including white water rafting through lush jungle scenery and zip wiring over the tree tops past the onlooking wildlife. The following day they visited the Sun Bear sanctuary to learn more about these fascinating creatures and volunteered their time helping building boardwalks, footbridges and making toys. On the final day of the trip, the girls visited the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, one of the last remaining places to see these amazing creatures in their natural habitat.

Everyone really enjoyed this exceptional and immersive experience learning about global topics and developing students as responsible global citizens with a passion for positive change.

Form II have been learning about enterprise as part of Financial Education in PSHE and were set the task of pitching a product or service to a panel of ‘Dragons’, (as in Dragons’ Den). The groups produced some interesting and varied ideas including a ‘Magic Toaster’”, a clothing service to make customers’ designs a reality and a customised, monthly ‘care package’ with items such as cosmetic and hair products. These groups attracted a good level of investment and made very convincing presentations. 

The winning and runner up groups successfully negotiated to reduce the amount of their company they had to give in return for their investment. The winners were Group 3 consisting of Emilia, Antonia, Esther and Minty with their charger using solar power. They have nominated UNCHR to receive their prize money of £50. 

Runners- up were Group 5 consisting of Stella, Issey, Sofia B, Elisa, Georgina and Cathie with their ‘unlosable’ golf ball equipped with GPS and sound to locate it. They have nominated Guide Dogs for the blind to receive their prize money of £25. 

Form III 

Form III were asked to consider and plan for a financially viable and safe charity event, using Excel spreadsheets to organise their financial planning and to produce a risk assessment showing awareness of potential hazards and how these could be minimised. They were also expected to use their creativity to design and market their charity event. Tasks were allocated within the group, depending on the aptitudes and interests of each student.  

 The groups all worked with independence and collaborated well together, managing their time well. Mrs Frier, Bursar, judged the financial and risk assessment aspects of the project. The winning group for Budgeting was Group 3 with Rose, Lily, Charlotte and Anaya, who won a £50 donation to Cancer Research. The winning group for Risk Assessment were Group 1 with Jayden, Neriah and Inès who won a £50 donation to the Sudan Relief Fund. Mrs Frier also wanted to particularly commend Vi Hammoud for her confident presentation with a further £25 donation to Group 5’s chosen charity GOSH. 

Financial education is an important part of PSHE, allowing young people to learn about managing money in preparation for their adult lives. It includes such topics as budgeting, saving and borrowing and the social responsibility of giving money to charity.
