Congratulations to Precious, UVI, who has been named Artist of the Month for November by The Circles of Art magazine.

ISA Art Competition Winners

Congratulations to our talented Lower Sixth Art students Alisia, Issey and Posy who achieved outstanding results in the regional stage of the ISA National Art Competition. Posy was awarded First place in her category for her Rose-Tinted photograph. Issey received First place for her Gut Instinct garment, and Bella for her photographic entry Laced with Oppression. Alisia was awarded Second place for her Love Me or Hate Me Textile sculpture and Ami placed Second in the Fashion and Accessories category for Unseen Beauty. With over 30 entries in each category, this is an exceptional achievement and a testament to their creativity and skill.

Posy and Issey’s winning entries will now go forward to the National Final in November. The ISA National Art Competition is held annually and invites participation from students across all ISA schools. The competition is run in two stages: the regional Area Art Competitions and the National Final. It features a wide range of categories covering all age groups and artistic disciplines, including 2D and 3D art, textiles, drawing, fashion, and photography.

Society of Women Artists, London

Heathfield Art Department had the pleasure of taking Precious, Savannah and Tamara, LVI to the Society of Women Artists (SWA) Summer Exhibition. All three students had their work selected and exhibited in The Mall Galleries.

In addition, they were awarded prestigious awards in:

Precious – The Circles of Art – ‘Exceptional’ Award (for artists under 25 years old) and the 2^nd Christopher Seow Student Award for her painting ‘Distorted’.

Tamara – The Derwent Special Commendation Award for her biro study ‘Mem Fum’.

Hannah (Alumna) also had her pencil drawing ‘Wander’ exhibited.

We thank SWA and the sponsors for recognising the students’ incredible talent for work which they had created at GCSE.

JCA Fashion Design Competition 2025 Winner

We are delighted to share that Precious, LVI, is the winner of the prestigious JCA Fashion Design Competition 2025. Her design was selected from thousands of entries and was chosen as the winner by Prof Jimmy Choo OBE.

Precious’ design was inspired by an upcycled rebel theme and was a tribute to her Nigerian heritage and West African identity, reimagined through the lens of sustainability and innovation. The bottom of the outfit took inspiration from the traditional Nigerian broom symbolising heritage and strength. For the top, she used cut-out pieces of denim layered with prints inspired by the iconic “Ghana most go” a powerful symbol of migration and survival. The puffer jacket crafted from layered black bin bags acts as an environmental concern as a way to protect our future generations.

Precious attended the JCA Revelation Fashion Show last night, and her design will be featured in the upcoming Jimmy Choo newsletter.

BSA Best Artwork Award Winner

Congratulations to Tamara (Form V), the winner of the BSA Supporting Excellence Award for Best Artwork Project, which was announced at the BSA Annual Conference for Heads last week.

Her winning entry explores the deep connections between the transatlantic slave trade and cultural resilience, drawing inspiration from personal history. Tamara highlights how enslaved people preserved their identities and resisted oppression using their hair as a secret tool for communication; braiding escape routes and safe houses into their hair, transforming it into a powerful language of survival.

Tamara’s artwork has also been selected to be exhibited in London for the Society of Women Artist’s summer show.

Shortlisted – BSA Supporting Excellence Awards – Best Artwork Project Award category

We are delighted to be shortlisted in the Best Artwork Project category:

This powerful GCSE project explores the deep connections between the Transatlantic Slave Trade and cultural resilience, inspired by personal history. Using braids, hair and traditional fabrics, Tamara (Form V) highlights how enslaved people preserved their identities and resisted oppression.

Braids played a central role, symbolising both loss and strength. Enslaved women were forced to have their hair shaved, erasing their cultural roots. But within the confines of plantations, hair became a secret tool for communication. Enslaved individuals braided escape routes and safe houses into their hair, transforming it into a powerful language of survival.

The project features a collection of garments made from hair and tribal fabric, each piece a tribute to cultural endurance. Through these creative mediums, Tamara captures both the trauma of slavery and the resilience of those who fought to preserve their heritage. This exceptional work invites reflection on the lasting impact of the slave trade and the unbreakable strength of cultural identity, showcasing remarkable skill and insight, especially for a GCSE student. We look forward to hearing the results on 6th May.

The Royal Ascot Millinery Collective 2025

Earlier in March, we welcomed Colours Immortalis from Ascot Racecourse to Heathfield to host a fashion illustration workshop for our Art students. During the session, students were given exclusive access to the racecourse’s private fascinator collection from the Royal Ascot Millinery Collective and were inspired to create their own garment designs based on these unique pieces.

The Fashion Design Enrichment Programme is a bespoke programme, and the outcomes produced during the day will be put forward to the prestigious Royal Ascot Fashion Design Competition 2025.

The winning design will be brought to life by the reputed British luxury fashion brand LK Bennett. The winner will have the privilege of wearing their custom-made design along with the designer hat at Royal Ascot. Furthermore, the lucky winner will also gain from an invaluable one week’s work experience opportunity at LK Bennett HQ. We are so proud of what our students produced on the day, and we look forward to hearing the competition results in April.

ISA National Art Competition 2024

With over 1700 entries submitted nationwide, and a total of 266 incredible artworks showcased at the final exhibition, we are thrilled to announce the following placed Heathfield students:

KS4 Drawing

First Place: E Sun – Synaesthesia

Ella explored the theme Synaesthesia and created this pencil drawing to represent the route the brain takes through multiple unrelated senses causing you to experience more than one sense simultaneously. The subject is wearing a fabric head piece which conceals the senses which is used as a physical representation of what a person experiencing Synaesthesia would feel.

KS4 Textiles

Second Place: F Hayes Flores – Coral Bleaching

Fernanda created a crocheted piece representing the impact of coral bleaching. The individual coral sculptures show how coral reefs support some of the most biodiverse ecosystems on the planet. Thousands of marine animals depend on coral reefs for survival and as the coral reef ecosystems collapse, already at-risk species may face extinction.

KS4 Fashion

Highly Commended: T Ezeokoli – Kaleidoscope

Tamara’s garment is made from hair and it was created to represent the unjust transatlantic slave trade. During this time, captors would brutally shave the hair of women, stripping them of their cultural roots and identity. Later, after the slaves were sold to plantations, they would braid their hair in patterns resembling escape maps. The slaves also used braiding patterns to communicate with each other.

I am so proud of Heathfield’s students who were placed in multiple categories. At Heathfield we aim to empower each student to produce artwork with meaning and purpose in a range of media, we are able to fully support the students’ interests and cater their projects to reflect the ever-changing creative world. I believe this is evident in the range of outcomes which were put forward for the ISA competition.

Arts Tour to New York City

The Arts Tour to New York City was both educational and memorable, providing students with the opportunity to explore one of the most dynamic cities in the world. The students visited famous museums and galleries, including the Museum of Modern Art and The Guggenheim, studying a range of classical and modern artworks close up.

We also visited the Empire State Building to enjoy breathtaking evening views, spent time drawing landscapes in Central Park and saw Disney’s Lion King, studying the costumes and set design.

The experience was unforgettable for everyone involved, with all the students fully engaged and enthusiastic throughout.
