Formula 1 in Schools

Form II’s Rocket Racing won the Future Stars award at the Stem Racing Southwest regional finals in January. During the Michaelmas term they designed, tested and adapted their F1 car, whilst developing a Brand identify and gaining sponsorship. They raced their car against 30 other teams and finished 2nd fastest overall, a fantastic achievement, congratulations! Well done also goes to our other two competing teams, AZAP Racing and Atlantic F1. AZAP Racing finished in the top 10 for speed.

Blue team were the winners.

Model United Nations

This term, six students attended Marlborough College’s Model United Nations Conference. In the preceding week, they had immersed themselves in topics ranging from Global Pandemic Preparedness and Sport Washing, to Nuclear Weapons Disarmament and Women’s Reproductive Rights. Julia, Megan and Mimi, LVI along with Maddie, Paari and Solomiia, Form IV, represented Argentina in a series of debates modelling the processes of the United Nations. Having been briefed by a Diplomat from London’s Argentinian Embassy they understood that Argentina was shifting closer to an alliance with the US, and were keen to argue and debate this topic with students from 20 other schools.

The Opening Ceremony included speeches from former Foreign Minister Malcolm Rifkind and representatives from Action Aid, one of the nine charities supported by the conference. With the conference declared officially open, our delegates proceeded to their own committee rooms.

All delegates acquitted themselves superbly, quickly learning the importance of speaking in the third person, thinking on their feet and challenging what they heard. They submitted amendments, raised points of information and gave speeches. Connections were made with students from other schools, all in the spirit of international relations.

Students are now excited about attending their next conference and can’t wait to get started again in September. We look forward to adding Model United Nations to our lunchtime co-curricular programme next term.

Society of Women Artists, London

Heathfield Art Department had the pleasure of taking Precious, Savannah and Tamara, LVI to the Society of Women Artists (SWA) Summer Exhibition. All three students had their work selected and exhibited in The Mall Galleries.

In addition, they were awarded prestigious awards in:

Precious – The Circles of Art – ‘Exceptional’ Award (for artists under 25 years old) and the 2^nd Christopher Seow Student Award for her painting ‘Distorted’.

Tamara – The Derwent Special Commendation Award for her biro study ‘Mem Fum’.

Hannah (Alumna) also had her pencil drawing ‘Wander’ exhibited.

We thank SWA and the sponsors for recognising the students’ incredible talent for work which they had created at GCSE.

Royal Ascot

There are school outings – and then there are truly memorable experiences.

Form I’s recent visit to Royal Ascot will certainly go down as one of those. With blue sky and brilliant sunshine, a highlight of the afternoon had to be seeing the Royal Procession. The girls had a prime position to wave and cheer as His Royal Majesty the King and other members of the Royal Family passed by in traditional horse-drawn carriages. A moment of national pride made even more special when we discovered that our enthusiastic group had been featured in the televised coverage of the event! A special thanks to our wonderful catering staff who carefully prepared a delicious, packed lunch including fresh strawberries and cream. It was a perfect nod to a classic British summer.

Royal Ascot gave our students a fantastic glimpse into British tradition and national culture. As one parent commented: “All in a week’s work for a Heathfield girl, no less.”

F1 in Schools Competition

In September last year, a group of Form II students came together with a dream and a vision to race their own Formula 1 car and, as a result Jam F1 was born! As part of the F1 in Schools programme, the students had to consider all aspects of a Formula 1 team, from design and engineering to brand identity. As the chief engineer, Jasmine had to quickly get to grips with the computer-based design software, Fusion 360, and got to work considering the best design to create downforce but keep the car light.

Alongside the car, the team worked on a verbal presentation ready to impress the judges. They designed a pit display to showcase their work and created a team identity based around Jam. Firstly, the car was scrutinised, and much like in real F1, if the car was underweight, too long or too wide the team faced penalty points. The next two rounds involved the verbal presentation and a meeting to discuss the process behind the design of the car. Finally, it was time for the big event – the race itself!

After a quick test to determine reaction times, Victoria stepped up to take the race. Once the lights went out, a carbon dioxide cylinder propelled the car down a 20-meter track at speeds of up to 20 mph. After 4 perfect races, the team placed 8th fastest.

The final presentation saw an inspiring talk about the F1 in Schools programme and where it can lead. Although Jam F1 didn’t come away with the top prize, they were shortlisted in two categories, Marketing and Brand Identity.

The Science Department are incredibly proud of the commitment, dedication and enthusiasm that Aisling, Anaya, Jasmine and Victoria gave to Jam F1. The team said, “We all wanted to take part in the competition because there were areas that we all want to go into when we get older, and the competition included all those different things.”

The Regional Finals were just the beginning. Talks are already underway for next year’s competition and the future development of the car.

Form III Residential Trip

Form III took part in the annual PGL trip to Marchants Hill in Surrey. Over the three days, the students took part in multiple activities, including archery tag, fencing, rifle shooting, giant swing, zipwire and much more. The trip was action packed and full of fear–conquering activities alongside the opportunity to get to know each other better. While the Giant Swing and Leap of Faith were extremely popular, so was the problem-solving activity, which included a race to see how long it took to get the whole team through a bicycle trye. Huge congratulations to Group 3, who (I have been assured by the PGL Staff), have set a world record for the challenge. All nine bodies went through in under 8 seconds. The encouragement and support for each other was commendable.

Summer School

Another fantastically successful Heathfield Summer School and Camp this year! Over 150 international girls joined our Summer School and over 170 girls attended Summer Camp. Students rated their overall experience of Heathfield at an exceptional 9.31 (out of 10). They particularly enjoyed the trips to London and Oxford and absolutely loved their time at Harry Potter Studios and Thorpe Lakes Aqua Park!

The direct feedback from the girls has been equally positive:

“I really enjoyed my stay here – the lessons, the trips and all the other activities. I made lots of good friends (as I did last year) from many different countries around the world. The staff were all really nice and helpful. The buildings, the rooms and all the facilities were amazing. In particular I enjoyed the swimming pool and tennis courts. My overall impression is really good, and I’d love to come back, if not as a student, as a helper or even as a staff member”

“It has been a very good experience that I’ll never forget”

“I really loved it, I’m sure I’ll come back next year because it was awesome!”

“I made lots of friends, improved my English speaking skills and grammar, and I loved the lessons”

“I liked it lot. It’s an amazing camp with amazing staff. it’s the perfect place to meet people from other countries and cultures. The facilities are really good and the lessons are great fun and you learn a lot of things”

So what does the year ahead hold? Our Summer School Director, John Endean, will be attending several fairs this year promoting our Summer School. John will be attending ICEF Berlin, ST Alphe Fairs in London, Malaga and Rome, and Educom Consultation Fairs in Paris, Geneva and Milan. Attending fairs and workshops and planning the exciting programme for 2025 are all part of John’s extensive work to ensure Heathfield School continues to attract international students from right across the globe.

Borneo Trip

Adventure was in the air this summer! Heathfield students travelled to Borneo to tackle the Pahu Trail trek, contribute to Sun Bear conservation and meet Orangutans in the wild.

Starting off in Kota Kinabalu (KK), the capital of Sabah, the girls were assigned team roles and explored the local markets and historical landmarks including Australia Place and the Pillars of Sabah. They then departed for a 4 day hike in the lush Borneo wilderness following rivers, discovering rural villages and paddy fields and crossing rivers via dramatic hanging bridges. At night they pitched their tents and cooked meals, learning bush skills and basic jungle survival skills under the stars.

Completing the trek, girls enjoyed a day of adrenalin fuelled activities including white water rafting through lush jungle scenery and zip wiring over the tree tops past the onlooking wildlife. The following day they visited the Sun Bear sanctuary to learn more about these fascinating creatures and volunteered their time helping building boardwalks, footbridges and making toys. On the final day of the trip, the girls visited the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, one of the last remaining places to see these amazing creatures in their natural habitat.

Everyone really enjoyed this exceptional and immersive experience learning about global topics and developing students as responsible global citizens with a passion for positive change.

STEAM Event

This week, we welcomed prep schools to our STEAM event. The pupils engaged in fun activities in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths. Congratulations to Eagle House who placed third, St George’s Windsor Castle who placed second, and our winners Godstowe! A huge well done to everybody that took part!

Stunning creations by the Upper Sixth in their Leiths cookery lessons

The Sixth Form Leiths students have created beautiful, festive Christmas cakes. Voting is now underway at Heathfield with pupils and staff casting their votes in these four categories: most technically proficient cake, most creative cake; most traditional cake and most original cake. We look forward to finding out who the winners will be!
