Outstanding LAMDA Exam Success

Our students achieved 100% Distinction in all their LAMDA examinations in Acting, Musical Theatre and Speaking in Public. In addition, the top grades are awarded UCAS points with our students gaining 130 UCAS points.

We are incredibly proud of our students’ results, they are a true testament to their hard work, growing confidence and love of performance, alongside the excellent guidance provided by our excellent LAMDA teaching team.

Heathfield Fashion Show

Heathfield hosted its legendary Fashion Show welcoming 250 guests over both nights. The event proved an outstanding success with a large number of our students taking part as designers and models, whilst others provided backstage and technical support. NEXUS was one of the largest and most ambitious shows we have ever presented as a school community.

The runway featured close to 100 garments, all designed, created and modelled by our talented students. The theme NEXUS was chosen to represent the relationship between the past and the present in fashion, exploring the connection between tradition and innovation. This was powerfully demonstrated through the integration of AI-generated projections within the show.

We were delighted to welcome Charlotte Stockdale, Heathfield Alumna and fashion stylist to Karl Lagerfeld, who commented that the garments and overall production surpassed what she typically sees in professional shows! We look forward to welcoming Charlotte back to Heathfield soon to work with our students.

Lower Sixth Photography Lesson

Lower Sixth Photography students recently took part in a lesson on shutter speed. Students split into two creative teams to explore the power of both fast and slow exposures. One group took on the challenge of freezing motion, capturing milk splashes and balls plunging into a vase of milk with lightning-fast shutter speeds. The result? Crisp, dramatic images, and just a little milk chaos around the studio!

Meanwhile, the second group stepped into the dark studio to experiment with light drawing, using an ice light and slow shutter speed to create mesmerising trails and glowing shapes. The contrast between freezing motion and painting with light brough thte concept of shutter speed vividly to life.

The room buzzed with creativity, curiosity and laughter, proving once again that technical learning can be both artistic and great fun.

ISA Art Competition Winners

Congratulations to our talented Lower Sixth Art students Alisia, Issey and Posy who achieved outstanding results in the regional stage of the ISA National Art Competition. Posy was awarded First place in her category for her Rose-Tinted photograph. Issey received First place for her Gut Instinct garment, and Bella for her photographic entry Laced with Oppression. Alisia was awarded Second place for her Love Me or Hate Me Textile sculpture and Ami placed Second in the Fashion and Accessories category for Unseen Beauty. With over 30 entries in each category, this is an exceptional achievement and a testament to their creativity and skill.

Posy and Issey’s winning entries will now go forward to the National Final in November. The ISA National Art Competition is held annually and invites participation from students across all ISA schools. The competition is run in two stages: the regional Area Art Competitions and the National Final. It features a wide range of categories covering all age groups and artistic disciplines, including 2D and 3D art, textiles, drawing, fashion, and photography.

Society of Women Artists, London

Heathfield Art Department had the pleasure of taking Precious, Savannah and Tamara, LVI to the Society of Women Artists (SWA) Summer Exhibition. All three students had their work selected and exhibited in The Mall Galleries.

In addition, they were awarded prestigious awards in:

Precious – The Circles of Art – ‘Exceptional’ Award (for artists under 25 years old) and the 2^nd Christopher Seow Student Award for her painting ‘Distorted’.

Tamara – The Derwent Special Commendation Award for her biro study ‘Mem Fum’.

Hannah (Alumna) also had her pencil drawing ‘Wander’ exhibited.

We thank SWA and the sponsors for recognising the students’ incredible talent for work which they had created at GCSE.

Shortlisted – BSA Supporting Excellence Awards – Best Artwork Project Award category

We are delighted to be shortlisted in the Best Artwork Project category:

This powerful GCSE project explores the deep connections between the Transatlantic Slave Trade and cultural resilience, inspired by personal history. Using braids, hair and traditional fabrics, Tamara (Form V) highlights how enslaved people preserved their identities and resisted oppression.

Braids played a central role, symbolising both loss and strength. Enslaved women were forced to have their hair shaved, erasing their cultural roots. But within the confines of plantations, hair became a secret tool for communication. Enslaved individuals braided escape routes and safe houses into their hair, transforming it into a powerful language of survival.

The project features a collection of garments made from hair and tribal fabric, each piece a tribute to cultural endurance. Through these creative mediums, Tamara captures both the trauma of slavery and the resilience of those who fought to preserve their heritage. This exceptional work invites reflection on the lasting impact of the slave trade and the unbreakable strength of cultural identity, showcasing remarkable skill and insight, especially for a GCSE student. We look forward to hearing the results on 6th May.

The Royal Ascot Millinery Collective 2025

Earlier in March, we welcomed Colours Immortalis from Ascot Racecourse to Heathfield to host a fashion illustration workshop for our Art students. During the session, students were given exclusive access to the racecourse’s private fascinator collection from the Royal Ascot Millinery Collective and were inspired to create their own garment designs based on these unique pieces.

The Fashion Design Enrichment Programme is a bespoke programme, and the outcomes produced during the day will be put forward to the prestigious Royal Ascot Fashion Design Competition 2025.

The winning design will be brought to life by the reputed British luxury fashion brand LK Bennett. The winner will have the privilege of wearing their custom-made design along with the designer hat at Royal Ascot. Furthermore, the lucky winner will also gain from an invaluable one week’s work experience opportunity at LK Bennett HQ. We are so proud of what our students produced on the day, and we look forward to hearing the competition results in April.

Arts Tour to New York City

The Arts Tour to New York City was both educational and memorable, providing students with the opportunity to explore one of the most dynamic cities in the world. The students visited famous museums and galleries, including the Museum of Modern Art and The Guggenheim, studying a range of classical and modern artworks close up.

We also visited the Empire State Building to enjoy breathtaking evening views, spent time drawing landscapes in Central Park and saw Disney’s Lion King, studying the costumes and set design.

The experience was unforgettable for everyone involved, with all the students fully engaged and enthusiastic throughout.

Music Captains’ Concert

There was an air of excited anticipation amongst parents, students, staff and, most importantly, performers as the lights came up on the School orchestra on the evening of Friday 4 October. Allegra and Ella, our outstanding and highly valued Music Captains, had assembled a wide range of talented performers, all of whom gave their

best to make the concert exceptionally successful.

Singers and instrumentalists from all year groups treated the audience to solos, duets, choral and ensemble works ranging from Bach, Brahms and Chopin to Ariana Grande, Andrew Lloyd Webber, and Disney film music. The most recent item on the programme was a delightful new work specially commissioned for the Form I Choir. Entitled The Lotus Eaters and composed by Edward Nesbit, a renowned composer and Lecturer in Composition at King’s College, London, this charming song enabled our youngest pupils to demonstrate their musical prowess and promise. The evening was rounded off with the band presenting their rendition of Cruela de Vil with their customary skill and enthusiasm.

The theme of the concert was Memories, and this was undoubtedly an evening to remember! Thanks are due to all who performed and supported the event and to Allegra and Ella under the expert guidance and support of Mrs Dance.

A Level Drama Trip

A Level Theatre & Drama students recently enjoyed a fantastic trip to see Our Country’s Good at the Lyric in Hammersmith. Directed by the talented Rachel O’Riordan, the play explores themes of redemption, the power of storytelling and the complexities of human nature.

The experience not only deepened our understanding of the play’s historical context, set against the backdrop of the First Fleet to Australia, but also provided valuable insights into the directorial choices that shaped its impactful narrative. The exploration of how art can bring hope and change to the lives of the characters was particularly thought-provoking.

The use of both historical and modern design elements supported the fact that the themes within the play are just as relevant in 2024 as they were when Our Country’s Good was originally presented, making it a perfect complement to our A Level studies. Examples of this include the use of traditional military uniform alongside modern attire and the beautiful, unspoiled Australian landscape becoming increasingly littered with plastic bags and drinks cans.

The trip stimulated vibrant conversation, analysis and evaluation among the students and has developed our appreciation for the power of theatre.
