Six girls received a bronze award for their participation and two girls received a silver award. Nicole from Form IV received a gold award and qualified to take part in the prestigious Pink Kangaroo competition.

We have also entered two teams of girls for external competitions this term. Four girls from Form IV took part in the Year 10 Maths Feast at John Hampden Grammar School and did exceptionally well against strong competition. Four girls from Forms II and III worked together to take part in the UKMT Team Challenge at Wycombe High School and were commended for their performance.

The House Maths competition was an overwhelming success with a record number of girls participating in the event. Many thanks to Lina, our Maths prefect in LVI Form for organising and running the event. In the week before the competition Forms I to III took part in a mymaths marathon, putting De Valois in the lead before the day of the main competition. Teams of four from each House took part in a traditional round of challenging questions in which they raced to be the first team to give the correct answer, and then in a Mathematical relay where their team working skills were put to the test. Meanwhile the audience used origami to make 100 equilateral triangles from A4 card for their respective houses to help their team make the tallest Truncated Tetrahedron Tower in the final round. Up to three volunteers from each House were given 4 weeks to learn to complete a Rubik’s Cube and were then timed during the competition completing three Rubik’s Cubes. All girls did exceptionally well, but special mention must go to Somerville who completed all three cubes in a total of 2 minutes and 8 seconds. This performance helped to put Somerville in the lead by two points ahead of De Valois at the end of the four rounds, however De Valois’s lead from the mymaths marathon enabled them to be victorious! Congratulations De Valois.
